Capturing Moments | Building Friendships

Rory O’Connor FIPF AFIAP

I am landscape photographer with a specific interest in the coast line. I also developed a passing interest in Nature photography, which came about during Covid lockdown.

My first exposure to photography was at the age of 8 yrs of age. My mother had a Kodak Hawkeye, which I still have. I was trotted to press the shutter, in order that my mother could include herself in some family photos. After that, I tipping around with my own Agfa camera, but without any serious momentum until I retired in 2011. I then took up photography more seriously and joined a camera club.

I soon began to see the endless possibilities for photographing the seashore. I shoot with a Nikon D800 with a Nikon 20mm prime at mostly f/16. I use a Benbo tripod, Lee filters, and Hahnel remote trigger. As time permits, Dingle, Achill, and the Jurassic Coast in Dorset are some of my favourite places to shoot. I can regularly be found on the beaches of East Cork. This is my training ground.

What captivates me most is trying to capture and reproduce my minds-eye interpretation of the scene. Many of my images try to capture variation in colour, motions, or reflections in the late evening or occasionally the early morning light, but presented as I saw things at the time.

The beauty of photographing the seashore is that you can go back to the same location, again and again, and each time you go there you are greeted by a different set of photographic conditions to contend with. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, it is a bit like going fishing.
